Memorial story

Nima Nouri

Nima Nouri was an 18-year-old only child from Karaj, Alborz, born on 27 Tir 1383 (18 July 2004). He loved cars and driving and had finished secondary school. Sources close to the family told BBC Persian that as a teenager he briefly joined a Basij post to help flood victims, then left within a week after seeing supplies diverted. During the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising he kept joining street protests despite his parents' pleas. When they tried to stop him from going to the fortieth-day gathering for Hadis Najafi, he answered: if I do not go, who will? On 12 Aban 1401 (3 November 2022), near Behesht-e Sakineh cemetery in Karaj, security forces hit him with shotgun pellets. A burial permit obtained by BBC Persian lists the cause as shock from bleeding, injury to vital vessels of the left groin and pelvic organs, and shotgun projectiles. A bystander first took him to Vasal clinic; staff called his father to arrive before agents did, but forces redirected him to Madani Hospital, where he died that afternoon. Authorities withheld the body for six days, pressed the family in daily interrogations, and buried him under security at Behesht-e Ali (Maahdasht), not beside Hadis Najafi. His unfinished gravestone text asked the living to promise freer lives in his place.
