Abbas Shafiei

Abbas Shafiei (Persian: عباس شفیعی) was a father of one from Karaj in Alborz Province. The Iran Human Rights Society and the German Wikipedia list give his age as 43, and the death certificates published by the 1500tasvir account record his year of birth as 1358 (1979 or 1980); Amnesty International's 2026 report Lives Cut Brutally Short gives 41.

On 12 Aban 1401 (3 November 2022), the fortieth-day mourning for Hadis Najafi, protests spread through Kamalshahr in Karaj. In a letter published by the Shahidan Ghiyam memorial and in video statements published by Voice of America Persian and BBC Persian, his brother said Abbas had just left work in Kamalshahr and had not yet reached the protesting crowd when officers attacked him. He fell while running, about six officers beat him with batons and kicked him as he lay on the ground, and one of them then fired birdshot at him from less than half a metre away.

He was taken to Madani Hospital in Karaj, where he underwent an emergency vessel graft. His brother said the family lost him in less than 48 hours, after severe bleeding, and Persian Wikipedia records his death on 14 Aban (5 November 2022). The Iran Human Rights Society and the NCRI lists give 17 Aban (8 November) and say he died after several days in hospital. The Iran Human Rights Society describes a close-range shot together with baton blows to his head and body.

According to his brother, the authorities held his body for about a week, with insults, humiliation and threats meant to silence the family, and then allowed burial only in a village far from their home, Anjilaq in Taleqan, where he was buried on Friday 20 Aban (11 November 2022). Voice of America Persian published footage of his fortieth-day memorial on 1 Dey 1401 (22 December 2022).

Amnesty International lists him with a photograph, killed in Karaj on 3 November 2022. The Iran Human Rights Society's list of 662 names (no. 263) and its consolidated list, the NCRI's Persian list of 185 names (no. 402) and list of 647 names (no. 407), Persian Wikipedia's table of the 1401 dead and the German Wikipedia list also record his death.
